How often should you change your air filter?
The honest answer depends on your filter's thickness, your household, and how hard your system runs. This guide gives you the real schedule, the warning signs to watch for, and what a neglected filter actually costs you.

Why filter thickness is the biggest factor
The number one thing that determines how long a filter lasts is how thick it is. A thicker filter has far more pleated surface area, so it captures a lot more dust before airflow starts to suffer. A standard 1-inch filter fills up in a matter of weeks to a few months; a 4- or 5-inch whole-house media filter mounted in a cabinet at the furnace can run most of a year.

Filter material and MERV rating matter too. A high-efficiency pleated filter with a higher MERV rating captures finer particles, which is good for air quality but can load up faster — another reason to check it on the shorter end of the range.
The main types of air filters (and how long each lasts)
Not all filters are built the same, and the type you have affects both how well it cleans your air and how often it needs changing:
- Fiberglass (spun-glass) filters. The cheapest option, usually 1 inch and MERV 1–4. They protect the equipment from large debris but do little for air quality, and they clog quickly — plan on every 30 days.
- Pleated filters. The most common residential choice. The folded media gives more surface area and much better filtration (MERV 8–13), and a quality pleated filter lasts 60–90 days. This is the sweet spot for most homes.
- Electrostatic filters. Self-charging media that attracts fine particles; available in both disposable and washable versions. Good for households with pets or allergies. Disposable ones follow the pleated schedule.
- High-efficiency / HEPA-style media filters. The 4–5 inch cabinet filters that capture the finest contaminants. They filter best and last longest (6–12 months) but require a system designed for the deeper slot.

How your household changes the schedule
The manufacturer's interval assumes an average home. Yours may not be average. These factors shorten the time between changes:
- Pets. Dander and hair clog a filter quickly — check every 30–45 days with one pet, sooner with several.
- Allergies or asthma. Change on the short end and consider a higher MERV to keep allergens and pet dander out of the air you breathe.
- Smoking indoors. Tobacco smoke loads a filter fast and shortens its useful life significantly.
- Occupancy. A busy household of five moves more dust than a single occupant; more people means more frequent changes.
- Nearby construction or dusty/rural conditions. Check monthly — fine particulate matter fills a filter fast.
- Wildfire smoke and pollution spikes. During heavy smoke or bad air-quality days, filters load quickly and a fresh MERV 13 filter helps protect indoor air.
- How hard the system runs. Peak summer cooling and peak winter heating push far more air (and dust) through the filter than mild shoulder seasons.
Signs your filter needs replacing right now
You don't have to track dates religiously — your home tells you. Replace the filter when you notice any of these:
- Visible dirt. A gray-to-black, even coating of dust across the pleats. Hold it to a light; if you can't see through it, it's done.
- Weaker airflow. The vents feel like they're pushing less air than usual — a classic sign of a clogged filter restricting the blower.
- Dust returning faster. Surfaces get dusty again quickly after cleaning, because the filter is no longer trapping particulate.
- A rising energy bill. A restricted filter makes the system run longer to hit the same temperature, quietly pushing up energy consumption.
