What MERV rating do you need?

MERV measures how much a filter catches — but higher isn't automatically better. Here's how to pick the right number for your home without choking your system.

The sweet spot: MERV 8–11

For most homes, MERV 8 to 11 is the right call. It captures the stuff that actually matters day to day — dust, pollen, mold spores, pet dander — while letting your blower move air freely. Going higher only helps if you have a specific reason.

When to go to MERV 13

Step up to MERV 13 if someone in the home has allergies or asthma, or during wildfire-smoke season — it captures much finer particles including smoke and virus-carrying droplets. The catch: MERV 13 resists airflow more, so confirm your system can handle it before committing.

Why higher isn't always better

A filter that's too restrictive for your equipment starves the blower of air. That makes the system work harder, raises energy use, and can even freeze the coil — the opposite of what you wanted. The goal is the highest filtration your system can move air through comfortably, not the highest number on the shelf.

What each MERV range actually captures

MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — rates how well a filter traps particles of different sizes, from 1 (barely anything) to 20 (surgical clean rooms). Home filters live in the 1–13 band. Here's what that means in practice:

MERV vs. MPR vs. FPR — decoding the box

Confusingly, the big brands use their own rating scales, so the shelf is a jumble of numbers. They all measure the same thing; here's how they line up:

The honest limiter isn't your preference — it's your blower. A filter that's too dense for the system reduces airflow, strains the fan motor, and can cause the same coil-freezing and efficiency problems as a clogged filter. Before jumping to MERV 13:

What MERV rating is best for a home?

Is a higher MERV always better?

No. Higher MERV filters catch finer particles but also resist airflow more. In a system not designed for it, a too-high MERV filter can reduce airflow, strain the blower, and actually hurt performance and efficiency. Match the filter to what your equipment allows.

What does MERV stand for?

Does a higher MERV filter help with COVID or viruses?

MERV 13 and above capture a meaningful share of the fine droplets and aerosols that can carry viruses, which is why MERV 13 is often recommended for airborne-illness mitigation. It's not a substitute for ventilation or a HEPA purifier, but on a system that can handle it, MERV 13 is the most filtration most homes can run.

Will a high-MERV filter lower my energy bill?

The opposite, if it's too restrictive. A filter your system has to fight against makes the blower work harder and run longer, nudging energy use up. The most efficient choice is the highest MERV your system can move air through comfortably — not the highest number available.
